I went to the opening for 20/21, which is an anniversary for the contemporary museum of Honolulu. Do you care? well maybe you should care more. Despite it seeming like some sort of ivory tower exclusive organization at the top of a mountain in Makiki (hoighty toighty district in Honolulu), The Contemporary Museum has been an arts advocate for twenty years now. YES, I AM BIASED. YOU WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING OF IT? GOOD, PLEASE DO SO.
Anyway, it was sort of an interesting idea for their twentieth anniversary show. They took artists who had participated in biennial shows, and asked them to select five Hawaii artists who deserve better exposure, and then sent those choices to be juried by some other folks. honestly, that's where I lost a little interest, I guess those people were important too, being that they were all unbiased and stuff. (hey, it's a small town here in Honolulu). Anyway, the artists were selected, and the show was curated, and you know what? it looks pretty damn good. I got to go and we brought the boys to the museum for the first time. To me, that was sort of intense. I talked to them about it, but i think they were distracted by all the new faces.

What's up. It's February Friday the thirteenth. Auspicious. Things are fun. Just had the house vaccinated and the boys have been fumigated. The tides are up and the wind is blowing. I hope all y'all out there are safe and using either your scarf or your sunscreen.
In the news, I went to an opening today for my fellow dude May Izumi.
She is quite excellent and some of her pieces won awards and stuff. So I am very proud, especially cause I got to help work on some of the pieces. it's like watching a precious baby cyclops you taught in kindergarten turn into a monstrous cyclopean horror and destroy a city! So go see this show! (unless you're like a scum-ass dirtbag or something.)
If you don't like monsters and dogfish, then go for the surfers and tree cozys. You'll thank me!

Q. Where will the government get this money?

A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition
TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by
spending your stimulus check wisely:

If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China .
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
If you purchase a computer it will go to India .
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras , and
Guatemala (unless you buy organic).
If you buy a car it will go to Japan .
If you purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan .

And none of it will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America . You can keep the money in
America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it
on prostitutes, beer and wine (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are
the only businesses still in the US."

I said to myself, you know what this "ha-ha FWD message" needs to do? Tell the TRUTH.
The truth is, everyone out there should go out and buy some AMERICAN ART It's like baseball, prostitution, tattoos, and booze all rolled up into one pretty picture (or sculpture, If that's the way your tastes roll)! What better way to stimulate the economy and keep the money within our country than to support those who represent America with a salmon smoking a pipe, sharing a sundae with a bearded woman in a bikini? Make American artists proud to be American again! or at least proud to make rude social commentary! No one does rude social commentary better than artists!(like any comedians read this blog, right?)
And for goodness sake, buy contemporary American Art! it's not like Jackson Pollock needs the cash!

Hi Blog, how ya doing?

Yeah, just got a new drawing tablet thanks to my high school pal and art purchaser Aibu9. Thanks d00d! You have also supplied my sons with two really nice chairs. Much appreciated. I should post a pic of the boys in their chairs smiling and looking fly, but instead I'll post the first drawing i did with the tablet. That way it's all like, related to the art part of this blog, and stuff.

Re; Speedpainting

When it comes right down to it, I really am one of those dudes that dwells on shit for quite a while both before and after I decide what I think about it. I don't know whether this is a good trait or bad. Basically, I stay inside my head too much. For a lot of reasons my head is a safe place to be so I don't say things that would be equivalent to taking a dump in someone's mouth. That's terrible. But often things go unsaid. That's a shame. The other day I was visiting Fugublowfish, and Mr. Pony was there. We were chatting and I was tired and frustrated with my lack of sleep, and they were discussing the trend of speedpainting on various different video sites. To be perfectly honest I was dismissive of speedpainting videos because for the most part they seem to be an ego trip played out in five minutes for the world to see(like 97% of most internet video) Mr. Pony mentioned that he liked them because he felt they were learning experiences. I noted this but remained steadfast in my dismissal.. I think we watched some asshole paint a bigger than life lion voltron mural on a wall or something, and it made me...angry.
Anyway, days later, I'm looking at the website of a concept artist I have come to admire, despite his somewhat predictable color and motif( Do all of us sci fi loving artists have to make everything dark, blue, brooding and slightly blurry?). And I saw he had a video posted, and I watched it and I have to say learned several really groovy photoshop techniques watching his video. So thank you Fugu and Pony for keeping open minds when I refused to do so. Sometimes it takes me longer I guess. I'll blame the boys for this lapse in tolerance. And thank you, Pao Yunsoo for teaching!

So yeah, It's getting closer and closer to Roctober. It's getting crazier and crazier in the house. Sadly, (so very sadly) we are losing our EPIC houseguest Baci(who I nicknamed the Goblin and Leia nicknamed Batman) the cat to a more permanent and capable pet owner, but he was an awesome guest who made sure we were made aware of his digestive abilities, and that we were warm and furry every night.
The library has been stripped of books, the garage sale has come and gone. now comes the exciting demolition, construction, and painting phase of the creation of the babeh room and Leia's new office space in the house. plus I will finally be getting bookshelves in my computer area, which will make for nice easy reference and probably a lot less exercise running up and down the stairs. yay!

Other news of interest;

The biennial is being de-installed this weekend. thanks to everyone who checked it out and for all the nice things everyone said! I enjoyed the experience thoroughly, and everyone at the museum rocked their socks making it a good atmosphere and an educational experience. Many thanks go out to the Installation crew for all their patience and late nights, Quala Lynn for the education, and walk/talks, and of course Inger for curating. Thanks to the other artists for being bad ass and interesting too!

I may be doing a show of my skateboard decks at the end of the year. It's still in discussion phase, but I am stoked!
I dunno what else is going on.
I started a group in flickr.com for homeless robots! Yay!
and ummm oh...yeah Facebook. BLEAH.

Yay! it runs in the family!

Well I know I definitely got my "fine art" sensibilities from my mom, dad, and my grandmother, but dang! looks like there's someone else in the family with a creepy side! Ahh I'm happy!
My (second?) cousin Libby made this and she is also good at making these crazy knitted dolls. I totally dig them. Libby's like a teen, and she's making stuff like this. I was drawing penguins with jetpacks at her age. Sigh. She has expressed interest in engineering as well, which sort of fits the rest of her family (read silicon valley). I hope she can find a way to somehow fuse the two fields together or something. Cause you know, compared to engineering, art is so lucrative.

Home from the...

Trip! So yeah, I'm a father to be. How crazy is that? I'm hoping to post some pics from the trip as I think I got some cool ones. More on that later. So by the way, Good stuff happening at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. or is it the Honolulu Academy of the Arts? Either Way, there is a new exhibition on the Asian American artist. It's called "One way or another" pretty slick stuff. It's all like, tradition turned on its head like none other than someone with the six thousand years of history piled upon them can do. Nice digs. It' a traveling show. From what I hear, once curator Michael Rooks pulled it from the ether and brought it to the Hawaii art scene, so kudos to him, ne?
Anyone who is actually paying attention to this should probably make their way to that show, and feel some Asian American art.

Welcome to my stuff.

By now you might have guessed that I'm Cade Roster. Good. moving on, here's what's up with my junk.
I recently participated in the 2008 Biennial at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu. Pretty fun. Do I have pics? yeah I have a few. One of the pieces I built for the show was a series of characters based off of a single mold. Not unlike the Munny/Dunny figures. I used a basic form with an anthropomorphic edge to it, for heightened cuteness. (Fig 1) I then took the basic form, made a silicon mold, and cast the form in several different materials including plastic(Fig 2) and resin.(Fig 3) I also pressed paper clay in there to see if it would work. Awesomely, it did.(Fig 4) These images are a few of the series that I did. I also made a larger scale installation piece based on characters that have been lurking in my head since about 2000a.d.(Fig 5)
So yeah, that was the art thats been on display so far this year. You can also check my flickr page for more pictures of my work. It might be easier than re-cataloguing everything here hehhe.
